Homemade Dog Food for Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkshire Terriers are tiny dogs with big personalities — and even bigger dietary needs relative to their size. Their small body mass means blood sugar can crash dangerously fast between meals, making feeding frequency critical. Their silky coat, sensitive stomach, and dental issues all need specific dietary attention.

Common Health Issues in Yorkshire Terriers

Understanding your Yorkie's most likely health challenges helps you make smarter food choices from day one. The good news: diet can significantly reduce the risk of most of these issues.

🍬

Hypoglycaemia

Yorkies can experience dangerous blood sugar crashes, especially puppies and small adults. They must eat at least 3 times daily — never skip meals or fast a Yorkie.

🦷

Dental Disease

The most common health problem in Yorkies. Feeding fresh whole foods instead of dry kibble, along with raw carrots and recreational chewing, supports dental health.

💧

Portosystemic Shunt

Some Yorkies have a liver shunt, which affects protein metabolism. These dogs need lower protein levels and should be diagnosed and monitored by a vet.

🤢

Sensitive Stomach

Small stomachs mean small margins. Rich, fatty, or new foods easily cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Transition any dietary changes slowly over 2–3 weeks.

Best Foods for Yorkshire Terriers

A Yorkie's ideal diet is built around their specific health risks and energy needs. Here is what to prioritise — and what to avoid.

✅ Best Foods for Yorkie

  • Chicken breast (lean, easy to digest)
  • Salmon (omega-3 for coat & skin health)
  • Eggs (biotin supports the silky Yorkie coat)
  • Sweet potato (gentle complex carbs, steady energy)
  • Pumpkin (digestive soother)
  • Carrots (teeth cleaning, low calorie)
  • Blueberries (antioxidants, bite-sized for Yorkies)
  • Oats (soluble fibre, gentle energy release)
  • Sardines (omega-3, small and easy to serve)
  • Cottage cheese (calcium, easily digested protein)

❌ Foods to Avoid

  • Onion & garlic (toxic — especially dangerous for small dogs)
  • Grapes & raisins (toxic, even a single grape can harm a Yorkie)
  • Macadamia nuts (toxic)
  • Chocolate (toxic)
  • Xylitol (extremely dangerous even in tiny amounts)
  • High-fat meats (pancreatitis risk)
  • Large meal once daily (blood sugar crash risk)
  • Rich table scraps (very easy to upset a Yorkie's stomach)
  • Avocado (toxic)
  • Raw meat (bacteria risk is amplified in very small dogs)

Simple Homemade Recipe: Yorkie Steady Energy Bowl

This recipe is designed specifically for the Yorkshire Terrier's nutritional needs. It makes enough for a 3 kg dog, split into two meals.

🍽️ Yorkie Steady Energy Bowl (3 kg dog)

60g chicken breast (diced, cooked)
1 egg (scrambled, no oil)
30g sweet potato (mashed)
25g pumpkin (steamed)
20g cooked oats
15g blueberries (mashed)
½ tsp salmon oil
1 tsp plain low-fat cottage cheese

How to Prepare:

  1. Poach or bake chicken breast with no seasoning. Dice into very small pieces — Yorkies have tiny mouths.
  2. Scramble the egg in a dry pan with no butter or oil.
  3. Steam sweet potato and pumpkin until very soft. Mash together.
  4. Prepare a small amount of oats in water only.
  5. Gently mash blueberries.
  6. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.
  7. Add salmon oil and a small amount of cottage cheese.
  8. Divide into 3 equal portions and feed at 8am, 1pm, and 6pm.

Yorkshire Terrier Nutrition Tips

⏰ Three meals minimum — non-negotiable

Yorkies must eat at least 3 times daily due to hypoglycaemia risk. For puppies under 4 months, 4–5 small meals are safer. Never let a Yorkie go more than 6 hours without food.

✨ Biotin for that coat

The iconic silky Yorkie coat needs biotin (from eggs) and omega-3s (from salmon or sardines) to stay healthy. Feeding these weekly makes a visible difference.

🦷 Fresh foods for dental health

The Yorkie's tiny mouth causes severe dental crowding. Hard raw carrots, raw chicken necks (supervised), and fresh foods help clean teeth naturally.

🩺 Always consult your vet before making major changes to your dog's diet, especially if your Yorkie has a diagnosed health condition. A veterinary nutritionist can confirm your homemade recipe meets all nutritional requirements for your individual dog.
