Common Health Issues in French Bulldogs

Before choosing what to feed your Frenchie, it helps to understand what health issues they're prone to. Diet can play a huge role in preventing or managing many of these conditions.

🫁

Breathing Difficulties (BOAS)

Their flat faces make them prone to breathing problems. Keeping them at a healthy weight reduces strain on their airways.

🤢

Sensitive Digestion

French Bulldogs are famous for gas and bloating. Bland, easy-to-digest ingredients make a big difference.

🌿

Skin Allergies

Itchy skin, redness, and ear infections are common. A limited ingredient diet can help identify and avoid triggers.

🦴

Joint & Spine Issues

Frenchies are prone to spinal problems (IVDD). Anti-inflammatory foods like fish oil support joint health.

Best Foods for French Bulldogs

A French Bulldog's diet should be easy to digest, anti-inflammatory, and not too high in fat. Here's a quick guide to what to include and what to avoid:

✅ Best Foods for Frenchies

  • Chicken (boiled or baked, no skin)
  • Turkey (lean, easy to digest)
  • Salmon & sardines (omega-3 for skin)
  • Sweet potato (gentle on digestion)
  • Pumpkin (soothes the gut)
  • Brown rice (easily digestible carb)
  • Carrots (low-calorie, great treat)
  • Blueberries (antioxidants)
  • Cooked eggs (protein & biotin)
  • Zucchini (low calorie, easy to digest)

❌ Foods to Avoid

  • Broccoli & cauliflower (causes gas)
  • High-fat meats (lamb, pork belly)
  • Dairy products (can cause loose stools)
  • Onion & garlic (toxic to dogs)
  • Grapes & raisins (toxic)
  • Corn (common allergen)
  • Wheat & gluten (skin trigger)
  • Soy (hormonal disruptor)
  • Artificial additives & preservatives
  • Salty or spicy foods

💡 Frenchie Tip: Because French Bulldogs are prone to obesity (which makes their breathing worse), always measure food carefully. Use our Portion Calculator to get the exact right amount for your dog's weight.

Simple Homemade Recipe: Frenchie Tummy-Friendly Bowl

This recipe is specifically designed for French Bulldogs — easy to digest, anti-inflammatory, and gentle on sensitive stomachs. It makes enough for a 10 kg Frenchie for one day (split into 2 meals).

🍽️ Frenchie Tummy-Friendly Bowl (10 kg dog)

120g boiled chicken breast (no skin)
80g cooked sweet potato
60g cooked pumpkin (plain)
40g cooked brown rice
30g steamed carrots
1 tsp fish oil (omega-3)
½ tsp ground flaxseed
Small pinch of turmeric

How to Prepare:

  1. Boil chicken breast until fully cooked (no pink inside). Let it cool, then shred or chop.
  2. Cook sweet potato and pumpkin — boil or steam until soft, then mash lightly.
  3. Cook brown rice according to packet instructions.
  4. Steam or boil carrots until tender.
  5. Mix everything together in a bowl. Add fish oil, flaxseed, and a tiny pinch of turmeric.
  6. Let it cool to room temperature before serving. Never serve hot.
  7. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze in portions.

How Much Should I Feed My French Bulldog?

As a general rule, adult French Bulldogs need roughly 2–2.5% of their body weight in fresh food per day. So a 10 kg Frenchie needs about 200–250g of food daily, split into two meals.

But every dog is different — age, activity level, and health conditions all affect how much they should eat. Use our free calculator to get a precise amount for your dog.

French Bulldog Nutrition Tips

🐟 Add Omega-3 Every Day

Omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, sardines, and fish oil) are one of the best things you can do for a French Bulldog's skin and coat. They reduce inflammation, which helps with itchy skin, allergies, and joint pain. Add 1 teaspoon of fish oil to your Frenchie's bowl daily.

🎃 Use Pumpkin for Digestion

Plain cooked pumpkin (not the canned pie filling!) is a miracle food for Frenchie bellies. It adds fibre that helps regulate digestion — it works for both loose stools and constipation. Add 1–2 tablespoons to every meal.

🥚 Eggs Are Great Protein

Scrambled or boiled eggs are easy to digest, packed with protein, and most French Bulldogs love them. They're also rich in biotin which supports healthy skin and a shiny coat. Give your Frenchie 1 egg a few times per week.

⚖️ Watch the Calories

French Bulldogs love food and are prone to becoming overweight. Extra weight puts pressure on their airways and spine, so keeping them lean is genuinely important for their health. Avoid high-fat cuts of meat and never leave food out all day — stick to measured portions.

🩺 Always consult your vet before making major changes to your dog's diet, especially if your French Bulldog has existing health conditions like allergies or spinal issues. Homemade food is wonderful, but a vet can confirm it meets all of your dog's specific nutritional needs.
